To see which categories other sellers have used, search for items that are the same as or similar to yours:

1. In the search box at the top of most eBay web pages, enter a few keywords (such as "Mickey Mouse watch" or "Coldplay CD").
   
   
2. In the pull-down menu, select "All Categories" or choose a category from the list.
   
   
3. When you look at the resulting listings, notice the number of bids and the page-view counter (if shown) in each category. Where there's a good item match, select categories with high bid and page-view counts.

• For example, a search for "Fenton glass vase" returns more precise search results than a search for "vase."
  
  
• Be careful when using "and," "or," and "the."
  
  eBay searches for "and," "or," and "the" in item names rather than as logic for keywords. Use these words only when searching for item names containing them (like "Diana Ross and the Supremes" or "Truth or Dare").
  
  
• Don't search by the category name. Searching by category (for example, "Collectibles") searches for items where sellers have included the word "collectibles" in their item title (for example, "vintage collectible belt buckle"), not categories

1. Click the Sell button at the top of most eBay pages.
   
   
2. Click Start Selling.
   
   The "Select a category" step appears, with a Search box, a "Browse categories" link, and, if you've listed on eBay before, a "Recently used categories" link.
   
   
3. Use one of the methods in step 2 to select a category that best describes your item.
   
   
4. If you don't find a category you like in the list of displayed categories, refine your search. Try using additional or more descriptive keywords.
   
   
5. Want to reach more buyers? You can also list your item in a second category using the suggested categories. Learn more about listing in two categories. After you select a recently used category, you might find that the options available for your second category have changed. This is because you can't list in the same category twice, so eBay removes the category you've just selected from the second category list.
   
   
6. Once you've selected your category, click the Continue button. Your category is created and you can continue listing your item.
